Author Gordon Dahlquist, an interview about "The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters"

Johnny Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, optioned this book, so of course I had to read it and once I read it, I wanted to talk with its author, the fascinating Gordon Dahlquist.

"The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters" is a suspense, mystery, fantasy novel set in a Victorian period fictional European country, the story unfolds over two and half days and includes characters with names such as Cardinal Chang, Miss Temple and Doctor Svenson. Ok that did it, I love it. Read what Mr. Dahlquist had to say here: Click here: Johnny Depp Reads Message Board -> JDR talks with Gordon Dahlquist I think you'll be intrigued too!

John Michael Bolger speaks with JohnnyDeppReads

John Michael Bolger is currently best known for his four season run as Lt. Johnson in the series Third Watch. But earlier this year, he caught the attention of the many people watching the filming of Public Enemies, the film about 1930s gangster John Dillinger and his gang.

John Dillinger's being played by Johnny Depp and John Michael Bolger plays Chicago police officer Martin Zarkovich. Mr. Bolger spent untold hours greeting the fans, he was, in my estimation, second only to Depp in the number of hours spent with the fans and people who were on the streets for hours, day in and day out, watching the filming. I wanted to talk to this humble man, to see what motivated him and how he got from TV to the movies. This is the first part of our conversation, the second part will run tomorrow. It's posted here Click here: Johnny Depp Reads Message Board -> JDR talks with JOHN MICHAEL BOLGER in our main forum.

SAM SARKAR

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sam Sarkar is a 23-year veteran of the entertainment industry. He began his career as an actor and was one of the leads on the long-running, syndicated television series “Neon Rider”. Following the series, Sam decided to pursue writing and worked for the hit television series “Beverly Hills 90210”. Stemming from his work on the show, he also co-wrote a television pilot for Spelling Entertainment under the direct guidance of TV legend Aaron Spelling. Deciding then to embark on feature films, Sam took some chances, following a varied path of writing screenplays and working as a sound technician. In 2004, after working on several films with actor Johnny Depp, Sam was asked to help run Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, headed by Christi Dembrowski. As such, he continues to serve the varied needs of Hollywood as an executive, producer and writer. Caliber is his first graphic novel.

Johnny Depp scouting Rum Diary?

Another Spanish language report has surfaced today, and it implies that Johnny, Initial's Graham King and director Bruce Robinson were checking locations for Infinitum Nihil's project "The Rum Diary" based on the novel of Hunter S. Thompson.

Here is the article: Click here: » Primera Hora - Llegan Clooney, Spacey y McGregor

And here is my rough translation/interpretation of what was written, and as always, time will tell if this is true.

Johnny apparently tried to or wanted to visit Puerto Rico within the last few weeks but a bad rain storm impeded it. The actor who was made famous by Pirates of the Caribbean and movie producer Graham King had planned to visit the island but a devistating tropical storm stopped it. Their purpose was to begin scouting for location settings for the filming of the movie The Rum Diary, based on the novel of Hunter Thompson that was based on his time in Puerto Rico in 1960. Because of the storm, they looked at Mexico, and it seems they would recreate Old San Juan there. It also is said that the film's director Bruce Robinson is about to make a visit to Puerto Rico, he was invited by local film people who want the project to be made on the island as Depp and the others would begin filming in January of 2009.

Johnny Depp rocks the house

Here's another article, but I have to wonder if the author may have mistaken Johnny's trusty old blue plaid shirt that he likes to tie around his waist for a kilt?

Johnny in a kilt?

Well, nothing the man does surprises me...yet.

A Rock and a Hard Place DVD Pre-order information

Johnny Depp joined with his fellow "The Kids" band members on stage in Florida last year for a charity concert benefitting the Sheila Witkin Foundation and we have been waiting for the DVD to be released. Finally, we have some pre order info today about ordering, go here fpr pre-ordering: Click here: Pre-Order Information

Click here: THE SHEILA WITKIN FOUNDATION for information about the concerts and the DVD.

This is what their website says, in part, about the concert and highly anticipated documnetary DVD.

"On January 28, 2007, The Kids, Z-Cars, Critical Mass, Charlie Pickett, The Cichlids, Slyder, Tight Squeeze and special guests The Romantics took the stage at Club Cinema in Pompano Beach, Florida to the delight of nearly 3,000 fans that came from around the world to see their favorite bands play together one more time. The event culminated in South Florida’s biggest reunion concert. Nearly $30 thousand was raised for worthy charities, and it was one of the hottest concert tickets of the year.

The historic live event was captured on film for a feature-length documentary Rock and a Hard Place: Another Night at the Agora and is told by those who lived it. The film chronicles the remarkable true story of South Florida’s influential rock music scene by combining dozens of exclusive interviews, live performances by the bands, and vintage video, radio broadcasts and photographs.

For the very first time, this extraordinary untold story has been brought to the forefront and examines the compelling and often personal journey of eight original Miami bands and their quest to leave an indelible mark on the music they loved."

"According to MTV, Johnny Depp is looking to find a director for "Rex Mundi" now that "Fight Club" scribe Jim Uhls has finished adapting Arvid Nelson's graphic novels. I don't know much about this project but any movie that keeps Depp out of a pirate costume is more than welcome in my book."

Wheels of criminals, Public Enemies and Johnny Depp

Great blog item in the NY Times that has to do with crime and it's vehicles. They talk about Public Enemies, Johnny and Bryan Burrough's book.

You can read the NY Times blog about criminals and their get away cars here.

Here's a photo of a 1935 Hudson Terra-plane that was apparently used in the filming of Public Enemies earlier this year. Dilling is said to have liked the bigger, faster engines of these cars.

FBI 100 The Last Steps of John Dillinger

From the FBI's files on John Dillinger:
http://www.fbi.gov/page2/july08/dillinger_072208.html

FBI 100
The Last Steps of John Dillinger

One of the most famous cases in our 100-year history celebrates an anniversary today: On July 22, 1934, the gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago, moments after leaving the Biograph Theater, where, ironically, he had watched a gangster film starring Clark Gable.

John Dillinger, Public Enemy #1

In the Depression years of the early 1930s, Dillinger’s bank robberies, shootouts, and jailbreaks earned him nationwide notoriety, but to the Bureau, he was just Public Enemy #1. And after months of pursuing him, a tip led Melvin Purvis, Special Agent in Charge of our Chicago office, to the Biograph on a hot Sunday night.

The day before, Purvis and Special Agent Samuel A. Cowley, who had been appointed by Director J. Edgar Hoover to head the Dillinger investigation, had met with a woman calling herself Anna Sage, a friend of Dillinger’s girlfriend, Polly Hamilton. She was hoping that her cooperation with the authorities would earn her reward money and keep her from being deported to her native Romania. She told Purvis that Dillinger planned to take both her and Hamilton to a Sunday evening movie at the Biograph or the Marbro.

Stakeouts were arranged for both theaters. A hand-written document from our Dillinger file, a diagram of the Biograph, illustrates the placement of some 20 men around the theater and across the street. The diagram shows the letters “A,” “B,” and “C” outside the theater box office, with an “X” next to each letter. A legend identifies the significance of the letters: “Dillinger companion,” “Dillinger,” “informant.”

A diagram of the stakeout of the Biograph Theater from our Dillinger files

The informant—Anna Sage—called Purvis at 8:30 p.m. that Sunday to say they were going to the Biograph. Two hours later, Dillinger emerged from the theater with his two companions. Purvis, standing nearby, lit a cigar. It was the signal for his men to move in. As they did, Dillinger realized what was happening and reached for his pistol. Agents fired, and Dillinger was hit. He staggered, then fell.

Dillinger’s death signaled the beginning of the end of the Gangster Era, but the nation’s fascination with those times lives on. A new movie about Dillinger, directed by Michael Mann, is scheduled for release next July. The film, Public Enemies, stars Johnny Depp as Dillinger and Christian Bale as Purvis.

Mann, a Chicago native, spared no expense to re-create the Biograph Theater and the look and feel of 1930s-era Chicago for the film. “Getting it visually right requires a lot of dedication,” he explains, thanking us for our “spectacular cooperation” in helping to make the film authentic.

The actual Colt .380 that Dillinger reached for as agents were closing in

Ross Rice, our spokesman in the Chicago field office, says that when he compared the movie sets with archival photos from those days, “you couldn’t tell the difference. I felt like I was stepping back in time.”
On Lincoln Avenue, where the Biograph still stands, the film crew “essentially rented out the entire block,” Rice says. The façade of every building was redone to look exactly as it did on that steamy night when Dillinger went to see Manhattan Melodrama. Attention was paid to every detail, from the streetlights to the trolley tracks right down to replacing the bricks on the street.

Mann says the film also strives for “period-accurate psychology,” to help illuminate inner thoughts and motivations of Purvis and Dillinger. That process included talking with agents while doing research for the film. Their “zeal and passion,” Mann says, helped him understand just how badly Purvis wanted to catch Public Enemy #1.

John Dillinger killed 74 years ago today

Yup....74 years ago today, John Dillinger was shot to death outside of the Biograph theater in Chicago after watching "Manhattan Melodrama" starring Myrna Loy, William Powell and Clark Gable. He was betrayed by his lady friend at the time, the infamous woman in red.

The film based on Bryan Burrough's book Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp, as the doomed gangster John Dillinger, wrapped filming June 30 of this year and is scheduled for a July 01, 2009 release. Public Enemies is directed by Michael Mann for Universal and also stars Marion Cotillard as Evelyn Frechette and Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis.
